Neal WaltersSubject: The file is not a Convert-to-XML Definition file
Author: Neal Walters

I'm trying to open a .net config file with the name
"BTSNTSvc.exe.config". It's a pure normal XML file, just a different extension.

I installed the Java Run Time, and still get this error:

I get the error:
The file <file> is not a Convert-to-XML Definition file, but some other XML format.

If I rename the file to something.xml, it opens fine.

Build 501h Evaluation Version 2006 XML Enterprise Edition.

Thanks,
Neal Walters

When you tried to open it and Stylus Studio didn't recognize the
extension, you probably chose "Convert to XML", and now .config
files are set to open in that module.

To undo that, go to Tools|Options|File Types, and remove any
extensions that are assigned to Convert-to-XML except for .conv
files.

Then, if you want, you can re-add .config and tell it to open it
as an XML file.

I'm missing something here. The file never "converted", I never see the XML in Stylus Studio, and I'm not sure what conversion is needed since it is an XML file.

Thanks again,
Neal

At some point, somehow, it or some other file with a similar extension
got marked as a Convert-to-XML definition. Those steps should still
break the wrong association.

From Tools/Options/File Types, I see a column of "type", such a .conv, .dff, .dtd, .java and so on. There is no .config in this column and there is no .exe. However, at the very bottom, there is an entry that contains "..." without the quotes. The "x" delete button is not active on any of these, I'm guessing they are all the originals and you don't let us change them, only add new ones.

So I tried again, created a simple books.exe.config to match the file-name, did I right-click open-with Stylus from Windows-Explorer.

Now is says "choose module for .config", and I selected XML document instead of Convert-to-XML. I don't recall seeing this screen before.
I left the "check box" checked so it would always open this file type.

Now when I go to Tools/Options/FileTypes .config is there with the module of "XML Document", and thus, when I now right-click open-with-Stylus, it works okay.

Thanks again,
Neal Walters
