I frankly think it doesn't especially matter which files are loaded.
What I see is that when you remove focus from the SS window, and you
have ten or so files loaded (various types, in my case), it starts to
spin higher. If you only have 2-3 files loaded, it still uses CPU, but
not quite as much. I also tried turning off the "check for externally
modified files" flag, but that appeared to have no effect.
I'm on 377o.

David,
we are aware that there are certain editor "modes" that trigger some CPU consumption; the typical one is the XML-to-HTML XSLT WYSIWYG tab; that module does spend some idle cycles to dispatch (sometimes useless) messages to the underlying Internet Explorer editing components.
Another possible cause is having XML Editor open on XML documents associated to possibly large XML Schema documents; in that case Stylus Studio regularly tries to refresh in the background its knowledge about the associated schema, and that may take CPU; you can try making the scheduled refresh less frequent by boosting the number in Tools | Options > XML Editor > XML Settings > Refresh Interval to something like 1000 seconds or more.
