Khawar AhmadSubject: Why you change the value of Attributes
Author: Khawar Ahmad

Hi!
I write this piece of code in stylus studio XSLTWYSIWYG Project

<table>
<tbody>
<tr align="middle">
<td align="middle"/>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

and when i switch view to WYSIWYG and then again switch back to source view it becomes

<table>
<tbody>
<tr align="center">
<td align="center"/>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

What is the reason behind this thing ?

bye

Stylus Studio depends upon Internet Explorer for its data model;
when switching between WYSIWYG and Text views, we are sending the
model to IE and the getting it back, and sometimes IE changes things.

In this case, though, the reason is that align= for both <tr> and <td>
doesn't support "middle" as a value; "middle" is a value for the valign
attribute, not for align. IE is helping you out by guessing that you
meant to say "center" for the align tag, as align uses left, center and
right as its values, but valign uses top, middle, and bottom. (There are
some other values too, like abstop and absbottom, etc. but that's more
than you asked :) ).

Hi!
Thnx for your reply tony but i was looking into some open source html editor i downloaded from internet. It uses the simple web browser control(Which means it also uses IE For its data model) but when we switch views it changes values from "center" to "middle" and i have gone through code and searched but found no extra layer between WYSIWYG and source view and concluded that by default MS Web browser Control changes value of align attribute (for tr and td) from "center" to "middle" but stylus does the exact opposite of it and This is the basic reason for my being confused. Kindly help me out onm this

Khawar

Hi Khawar,

Yes, MS web browser control (IE) changes align attribute from "center" to "middle". The reason in IE the "center" becomes "middle" is that: when IE loads the source into DOM, it changes the TR/TD align attribute value from "middle" to "center". When the DOM is serialized (saved), IE always converts "center" to "middle" regardless what the original value is. I'm not sure this is a right thing to do (could be a bug).

In Stylus Studio, on the other hand, it regenerates XSLT source from the DOM when switching from WYSIWYS to XSLT source editor. The XSLT generation uses the values the DOM presents to it (i.e. "center" instead of "middle" in this caseI, resulting in the align attribute value being changed from "middle" to "center". IMHO, changing from "middle" to "center" is better than the other way around because it at least changes from an invalid value to a valid value.

Just out of curiosity, does the change of the align attribute value from "middle" to "center" impose any problems to your applications?

Hi Min!
Thnx for your reply. The value middle is not HTML 4.0 compliant so it does not produces the desired results this is the problem.
Any ways i have checked and yes you are right the DOM converts middle inot center and innerHTML does exact opposite of it.
Another curiosity if you can answer that are there any other values ahich are chenged by innerHTML? if you know any please let me know

Regards
Khawar
