How would i read in a parameter from the xalan command line and print it as output?

what's wrong with <xsl:value-of select="$target"/>?
(assume $target is your stylesheet parameter)

so would that be able to read it in. im fairly new to this so im kinda slow. would that work?

Steve,
the xsl:value-of instruction will print the value of the parameter that you specified. How you pass the parameter depends on how you interface with the Xalan processor.
For instance, if you use the command line processor that ships with Xalan, from the documentation on http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/commandline.html it's clear that you should add "-PARAM target 'value'"
