Jean FarnsworthSubject: Can I turn off automatic entity expansion in the DTD editor?
Author: Jean Farnsworth
Date: 14 Feb 2005 11:00 AM
I created several entities in my DTDs that contain lists of elements that I use to define other elements. I'm finding that all of the entities I defined this way are now expanded in the other element declarations. I'd like to turn this off. With the entities expanded, there's no way for me to know which entity I specified where. It's very frustrating! It makes me want to go back to using notepad! Please respond ASAP. I'm going nuts.

Hi Jean,
if you are referring to parameter entities, you cannot do that (the tree
view needs to expand them to be able to display the structure of an element
definition); if you refer to normal entities, there is a button in the
toolbar that enables/disable the entity expansion (it's the last one on the
right).

Hope this helps,
Alberto

Alberto,

I don't see the button you're referring to. I have three levels of toolbars and the last one on the right for the three are About, Source Control, and Breakpoints respectively. None of those seem to do the trick. Is there another toolbar I can turn on that has the option you're referencing?

Hi Jean,
those are the "global" toolbars, that provide shortcuts to commands
generally available. Every open document has its own toolbar, located
between the list of tabs and the content of the document (see attached
picture).

This is very bad news, Alberto. It looks like the entities I've created are indeed parameter entities. And, those I've created and then referenced in an element declaration are causing trouble. When I try to go to Tree View, Stylus Studio tells me there's something wrong with the declarations and will not switch out of the text view. I'm sure my entity and element declarations are valid because I've been defining them this way for years. They are also readily accepted in my XML editor. Maybe it is because I haven't defined any general entities? I'm trying to identify where the parameter entities are used throughout a set of DTDs and with entity expansion on, this is impossible. Is there any way Stylus Studio can be of use to me here? And one last thing, I don't have the Entity icon you showed me on my toolbar. Again, this might be because I've defined parameter rather than general entities. I've attached a screen shot. Any light you can shed on these problems would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jean,
the toolbar button will appear when you switch to the tree view (you are
now looking at the text view). As for the error you have in the entity
definition, could you send me the DTD so that I can have a look at it?
(privately to my e-mail, if you prefer).

Thanks,
Alberto
