luigi fridiniSubject: trouble with displaying all text of node around child element (newbie)
Author: luigi fridini

I want to display the text of node 'p' and the text of child-node 'enumerate':

like this:
bla
*first
*second
more bla

i have this source xml-file:
<p>bla
<enumerate>
<item>*first</item>
<item>*second</item>
</enumerate>
more bla</p>

i use this xsl syntax:
<xsl:template match="p">
<p>
<xsl:value-of select="text()"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="enumerate"/>
</p>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="enumerate">
<xsl:apply-templates select="item" />
</xsl:template>

problem is: only the first part of node 'p', "bla", is displayed. The second part, "more bla", is ignored. What do i do about it? It's probably very simple, but i can't get it to work.

thx,

Luigi

Hi Luigi,
xsl:value-of will only return the value of the first node being selected.

You may want to use this

<xsl:template match="p">
<p>
<xsl:apply-templates/>
</p>
</xsl:template>

This will iterate over all the children of "p" and invoke the appropriate
template: if it's a text node it will be printed by the default template,
if it's a "enumerate" it will be handled by the template you wrote.
Be careful that, if "p" has other elements as children, the default
template will write all the text fragments they have as children: so
you must create empty templates for them.

Hope this helps,
Alberto
