Matt AdamsSubject: How to identify elements with namespace prefixes in XSLT?
Author: Matt Adams
Date: 30 Sep 2004 06:04 PM
I am searching in a xslt stylesheet for the occurence of <myns:Name attr="..."> tags with:

<xsl:stylesheet version="2.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:variable name="result" select="exists(//dummy:Name)"/>
<xsl:value-of select="$result" />
<xsl:if test="not($result)">
not found
</xsl:if>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

When I apply such a xslt stylesheet to an XML document containing

xmlns:dummy="http://www.dummy.com"
....
<dummy:Name>John</dummy:Name>

I got the following error:

Error at xsl:variable on line 3 of file:/D:/xml/test.xslt:
XPath syntax error in {exists(//link:Name)}:
net.sf.saxon.om.NamespaceException: Namespace prefix dummy has not been declared
Transformation failed: Failed to compile stylesheet. 1 error detected.

How do I have to rewrite the XSLT stylesheet to be able to find <dummy:Name>

Matt

Hi Matt,
You have to define the same namespace in the stylesheet like that

<xsl:stylesheet version="2.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
xmlns:dummy="http://www.dummy.com">

<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:variable name="result" select="exists(//dummy:Name)"/>
<xsl:value-of select="$result"/>
<xsl:if test="not($result)">not found</xsl:if>
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

How should I re-write the exists() statement if I want to find a <Name>
tag if the namespace prefix is needless. In other words if I want to find a <Name>
tag with an existing but unknown and important prefix?

Hi Matt,
if you are interested only in the Name part, you can use *:Name
