Anthony IsenorSubject: Schema documentation using links file
Author: Anthony Isenor
Date: 20 Jan 2004 07:52 AM
Hello: I have a problem using SS Ver. 5.1, specifically the schema documentation generation using a links file. I am trying to generate documentation for a nest of 6 XSD files (its the GML schemas). The "6" indicates the nest is 6 layers deep; so one xsd "includes" another, which "includes" another, and so on. It seems to work once in a while, but most of the time I get the error "The system cannot locate the object specified". I wish it told me which object.

I have obtained an example set of files from this Tech Support site, but the example is not nested to many layers. I am suspicious the nesting is related to my problem. Does anyone have a nested example of xsd documentation that actually works?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Anthony,

"The system cannot locate the object specified" is thrown when the links file is not found.

You have to use the full path when you specify the linksFile parameter in the Documentation properties.

Hope this helps.

I got this to work, but the error can be thrown by more than the links file.

Here is a simple rule I have determined:

The file-location attribute in the links file tag must agree
exactly with the schemalocation attribute in the xsd files or elements
AND
both must be the full path location.

If it is not the full path in the xsd file, you can get the error:

"The system cannot locate the object specified"

So, you can get the error message for two different reasons:
1) the links file is not found
2) the xsd file in the include or import statement is not found

Number 2 only applies when you generate the documentation. If you place all the schemas in the same directory, without the full path in the include statements, and then validate a document - it will validate. However, if you try to generate the documentation without the full path, you get the error message.

I am having trouble generating documentation as well. The links in my
XML Instance Representation & Schema Component Representation do not work. I even downloaded the zip file from this website http://www.stylusstudio.com/SSDN/default.asp?action=9&read=2530&fid=23#7084 that I found in a posting from Ivan Pedruzzi. I downloaded the zip file and copied all of the files to C:\temp\xsd. I opened the project and generated documentaion for the test_include_master.xsd. Then I clicked on the 'Address' link under XML Instance Representation & Schema Component Representation sections but received a popup message stating 'address' element cannot be found. Under the Options I have SearchIncludedSchemas & SearchImportedSchemas set to True and the LinksFIle options is c:\temp\xsd\links.xml. I even tried generating documentation withthe LinksFile value set to just links.xml. I have the same problem generating documentation in my project. I have my schemas setup in a treeview structure whith my top xsd files in the root and my include files in a 'base' directory with my core xsd files in a 'core' directory under the 'base' directory. They are setup this way in my project as well.

Any help will be apprciated.

Also when you are using a links.xml file; you can add only one top level element in the file, what element do you use? Do you have to have several link files for each schema?

Hi Carolyn

Which Stylus Studio version are you running?

Could you send us a zip with a small test case in the same directory structure you are suing?
