Lee HumphriesSubject: SS Crash 4.6 103r: Working with Large XML
Author: Lee Humphries

I've just had two separate crashes while working with a largish XML file (.5Gb).
1. Stylus had finished saving the file after indenting it. When I closed the documents window, Stylus crashed.
2. After restarting my computer I reopened the file in Stylus. Stylus reported an "Out of Memory" error - strange that - and only displayed around the first four lines out of the file, the remainder of the document window was not properly redrawn. I pressed the down arrow twice, and it seems that when the cursor was about to move to the third line Stylus crashed.

ApplicationStruzzo(147).log
Or in pairs

Half a GB is a pretty large size for a document to be edited in Stylus. I'm
not surprised you hit memory problems; not many machine configurations
would be able to handle that scenario...

The log file points to issues in memory allocation, as we could expect; I
guess the possible solutions (some of which could be unfeasible) are
limited to:
- Increase the physical memory of the machine
- Increase the size of the swap file
- Split the large document into smaller, manageable pieces

Well, mine certainly couldn't ;-)

I thought as much.

I supplied the log file because I was dealing with an extreme situation and just in case it provided some pointers (no pun intended) to getting Stylus to cope with such things better.

Thanks; and we did appreciate having a chance of taking a look at the log
files. Stylus Studio tries to handle situations like this; but
memory-related exceptions are in most cases pretty tough to recover from...

Thanks,
Minollo

You recommended "Split the large document into smaller, manageable pieces"<br> <br> I have a 2.5 GM XML file that I would like to view and extract data from.<br> I have never viewed it. How do i go about splitting it into smaller files?

I'm not aware of any tool that will allow you to manipulate a 2.5GB XML document.

I would guess your best option is to rely on a SAX parser and to split the document according to some logic depending on its structure...

You may want to post a question to the Apache Xerces mailing list to see if anyone has better suggestions.

OK, as far as the SAX parser goes... How do i go about doing that on a 2.5GB file with Stylus Studio? I have the trial version.

Stylus Studio won't be able to help you on that; you will need to write
code to do what you need to do...
