Lee HumphriesSubject: SS Issue: Go slow when loading second project
Author: Lee Humphries
Date: 11 Sep 2002 06:31 PM
I usually fire up two instances of SS working against two different projects.
For the last couple of beta builds I've noticed that the second instance is frequently taking a very long time to load up the project, this appears to be related to getting the source control information.
The two projects each have over a hundred files.
It doesn't seem to matter which project is loaded into the first instance and which one is loaded into the second. The second instance will take much longer to load in about 8 out of 10 attempts.
The source control is MS VSS.

Hi Lee,
if you are seeing this problem only since a couple of updates, that's
probably caused by the fact that we now batch the requests to the source
control provider, to improve performances by reducing round trips.
Probably VSS can handle just one request at a time, and if the second
instance of Stylus Studio happens to do a refresh while the first one has
just asked for the status of hundreds of files, the second request could be
delayed.

As Stylus Studio sends one refresh request for each folder in the project,
can you try rearranging the Stylus Studio project so that the files are
organized in different folders (with each folder containing around 10-20
files)?
Note that you don't need to move the files in the file system: just create
a new folder in the Stylus Studio project and drag and drop the file to be
under it.

Let us know if the problem persists,
Alberto

This description lines up with the behaviour that I'm seeing.

I already have both projects organised this way, although in each project there is a folder with around 40-50 files in it.

I've been trying 100g for the last few days now and the problem still remains. If you like, give me an address and I'll email the two project files in question.

Feel free to send them to me.

In 100g we have lowered the number of batched operations so that SourceSafe
wouldn't be blocked for too long.
