Eliot KimberSubject: Feature Request: Editing In Tree View
Author: Eliot Kimber
Date: 17 Jul 2002 11:22 AM
I have used Arbortext's Epic Editor for years to do SGML and XML editing. One feature of Epic that I find to be really powerful is the ability to do editing in their tree view, which is very similar to Stylus Studio's. In Epic, all the text is directly editable in the tree (rather than in a separate window you have to click to open). Also, the text in the tree can be wrapped.

For attributes, they provide a quick way to open an attribute editor dialog.

Thanks,

You can do that in Stylus Studio; just click on an item and then either to
the usual Windows "click-wait-click" to enter edit mode, or press F2 to
change the element/attribute name or SPACE to change the element/attribute
value.

>Also, the text in the tree can be wrapped.

Text is wrapped when displayed; when editing it's visible in a single line.

The problem with this is that it makes editing very slow. In Epic, the tree behaves just like the main editing window, in that I can move around with the cursor from context to context using the keyboard and just type--SS's tree view doesn't have this level of convenience. Note that I am typically editing prose documents (sections and paragraphs), rather than data-holding documents, so my requirements for editing are probably different than for many of the SS use cases. I also realize that y'all aren't positioning SS as a document editor. Nevertheless, it works well as one and could potentially replace my use of Epic as my main XML document editor if the tree editing was as smooth as it is in Epic.

I understand this sort of behavior is probably quite a challenge to implement, but I wanted to at least register my request.

Thanks,

Eliot

Oh, I see what you mean; you wouldn't want to have the "glass" between you
and the text and have to remove it with F2/Space every time.

It's definitely registered; we understand the problems you are describing.

Thanks,
Minollo
