Peter JaffeSubject: XPath expressions in watch window for 3.1.59a
Author: Peter Jaffe

I am having difficultly using the Watch Window. My goal was to confirm the ability to evaluate XPath expressions while debugging using Build 59a.

What I have been able to do so far is:

1. Get a tiny input field to become active when I resize lines in the watch window (using particular cursor positions and movements...). However, whatever I type in (and the input field) disappears as soon as focus is lost on that row.

2. I select and drag a variable into the watch window with no apparent results. However, if I then do the line resize trick to get the input field to appear, the variable value is displayed in the input field.

3. I can select and drag an XPath string from the XSLT into the watch window. This results in the first 60 or so characters of the result being displayed in the watch window which disappears when the scope is left. (This is limited to an XPath that can be fully selected in the XSLT source)

The behavior of point #3 seems to be closest to the intended behavior however, it seems to have a flaky interface.
* A right mouse click clears the line.
* The line resizing trick makes the value editable in an input field, but the "..." that appears around the 60th character appears to be part of the content.

My efforts indicate that something seems to be working, however, I am having difficultly determining whether I am using it incorrectly, or if it is not behaving as intended.

Thanks.

Pete

Can you send us (me) a screenshot of what you are seeing? The watch window
should be similar to the Variable window; when you click on the left column
of the first empty line, you should see an editable field with a blinking
cursor. Doesn't that happen to you?

That works for me, even if we are not pre-pending '$' to the variable; so,
I drag&drop a variable name to the watch window, see it listed in the left
column, with an empty value on the right; if I then go and edit the
variable name adding a '$' sign, I also see the value.

Yes, the 60 characters or so is a current limit; in the next builds that
will be improved and we will show the actual tree fragment (displayed as a
tree) in that area.

We need to understand why you are having problems typing values in the left
column; that seems to work flawlessly on all the machines we have tested;
the only issue in sizing that we have noticed is that the Watch window
tends to get very small if you dock it in the same bar with Variable and
Stach windows.

Screenshots about what you are seeing would help.
Thanks,
Minollo

The behavior I was seeing was immediately remedied by undocking and redocking the Watch window. Now everything behaves exactly as described (and I really like it!). I can no longer reproduce the failure mode on my machine, but I'll try to get a screen shot off a new installation. If my memory serves me, both the "Name" and "Value" columns weren't clearly delineated, and I also was unable to control column width.

Now that I see it working perfectly, I would suggest ignoring my previous report... however, the interface was VERY confusing when it was acting up. I had someone else play with it as well, but I never tried undocking it until I read your response.

I look forward to this... Keep up the good work.
