I'm using StylusSTudio 3.0.0, build 043.
[Java VM 1.3.1-b24 Classic VM Sun Microsystems Inc.]
I'm having trouble with the defaulting of values for top level elements in my stylesheet. I've included a minimal stylesheet which illustrates the problem below.
If you run the stylesheet (any arbitrary XML input file should do) a message will indicate that the parameter is empty even though a default value is provided in the "select" attribute of the parameter definition.

What you want to say is select="'red'", not select="red"; in the second
case you are evaluating the XPath expression "red" in the current context,
and it evaluates to nothing.
