Mike AshtonSubject: "XML Report", I'm forced to choose an output format
Author: Mike Ashton

Hi,

I have recently purchased a copy of Stylus Studio Enterprise after a brief evaluation period a couple of months ago. I purchased the software so I could create a single XML Report and use it to generate either HTML or XSL:FO. The version I trialled gave me the option to select a format at the point of generation. I know that I'm not going mad, because the online demonstration is still showing the old version (http://www.stylusstudio.com/xml_videos.html and select "Visual Stylesheet Design").

The new version forces me down a particular route as soon as I select the option from the File > New menu. This basically negates any reason I had for purchasing the software.

Please tell me there is still a way for me to generate both from a single template?

Thanks.
Mike.

No, unfortunately you cannot generate multiple output formats from the same template. On the positive side, this behavior will allow XML Report to provide specialized behavior and features depending on the selected output format.

Is there any chance of this feature being re-introduced into the software? Although I can see why would you want to provide specialist features based on the destination template type, why remove the lowest common denominator altogether?

Why can't I just work with a reduced feature set and still have the same functionality that I had in the software I evaluated?

Thanks
Mike.

The current behavior will not be modified in the foreseeable future.
For what it's worth, we do understand your point, and frustration.

As I have already stated, this feature is the only reason I bought this software in the first place. It is surely not usual practice to take features away between revisions, is it?

Is there any way that I can download a version of 2007 and run it with my existing key?

Unfortunately, that's not possible.

If that's the only reason you purchased the product, I can only suggest contacting stylusstudio@stylusstudio.com providing details about the purchase and asking for a full refund.

Mike KingSubject: One report for HTML or FO

Hi, I'm wondering if there's any update on this question. I would also like to build one report and be able to generate HTML or FO capable XSLT.

I'm using Stylus Studio 2009, and it certainly looks like I have to build the same report twice for HTML or FO. This seems like it would be an excellent feature - I know that I could use it today.

So is it possible to reuse my HTML XSLT for FO purposes?

I got a refund on my product because they had no plans to re-introduce the feature.

Thanks.

Did you try doing a cut and paste from one report to another? I wonder if that would work - i.e. complete the report for html, then create a new report for fo, pasting the original into the report builder?

I'll give it a try. Might work.

I'll answer my own question - yep it works fine. I copied and pasted my html report into an fo report. The resulting pdf was perfect.

So for simple reports this works fine. Maybe there would be issues with more complex reports with paging and stuff. It's a good starting point though.
