I am running STYLUS STUDIO 2008 XML PROFESSIONAL SUITE RELEASE 2.
I am experiencing a problem with the menus on this application. When I access a menu, after a second or two, the menu goes blank and begins to "flash" with a vertical line running down the right edge of the flashing blank menu. In order to stop this behavior, I have to move my mouse off the menu and click elsewhere on the screen. The attached jpg illustrates what I see on the screen when this occurs.
This is most annoying and I very much would like to know what I must do to remedy the problem.

Hi Robert,
that's a very strange behaviour: do you recall when it started to occur? (e.g. after the installation of a Windows patch, or of a new software). Does it occur with any menu, or just with the "Debug" one? Does it depends on the document currently being edited?

The Stylus software exhibited the behavior from the very first day it was installed. To my knowledge, there were no intervening software installations / updates prior to the behavior exhibiting itself.
Any menu can (and does) exhibit the behavior if it is open for more than a few seconds. I have tried to come up with some sort of correlation of other system events and this behavior without success. The only real difference between the Stylus software and all the other software I currently use is that the Stylus application runs on the Java virtual machine under Windows Vista.

Hi Robert,
Stylus Studio is a native application written in C++.
The Java Virtual Machine is used only to host the run-time components: DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters.
Which UI theme are you using?
Tools -> Options -> General -> User Interface -> UI Theme
If you change the theme do you notice any difference?

Hi Robert,
could you try installing an evaluation copy of the latest version of Stylus Studio, v.2009, from http://www.stylusstudio.com/downloads/current/ent-edition ? It will install side-by-side, so it won't interfere with your current copy.

Hi Robert,
we are not ignoring you; we are still trying to reproduce the problem in house. We tried several combinations of Vista setup, but none failed. Do you have anything special in your setup? e.g. 64 bit OS, multiple monitors with non-standard arrangements, non default font/theme/Aero settings...
Subject:Application Menu Problem Author:Robert Caryl Date:21 Jan 2009 10:07 AM
The only non-standard thing I'm doing is this: I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with an external monitor. I have the graphics adaptor setup so that the laptop thinks it is using only the single monitor in 16bit color at 60HZ with a screen resolution of 1680 X 1050. Other than that, everything else is plain vanilla.

Hi Robert,
could you try disabling the Vista themes for Stylus? (right click on the icon for Stylus on the desktop, choose Properties, select the Compatibility tab and check the Disable Visual Themes option).
If this doesn't work, could you send an e-mail to stylus-field-report (at) progress.com so that we can send you some test programs to run?

I also checked "run the program in compatiblity mode for" Windows XP Service Pack 2 along with the disable vista themes. Result: all works fine now. No blanked out menus so far. And usually, I get them almost immediately.
