Simon HeapSubject: Grid view for nested tables
Author: Simon Heap

I'm an XML novice, evaluating SS, so the following question may prompt snorts of derision ...

I'm interested in the capabilities of the Grid view of an XML document. Taking books.xml as an example, it's possible to expand each node in the "books/book" nested table, such that the author(s) for each book is/are displayed in a further nested table "book/authors/author". That is, in order to view the entire set of authors for all of the books, each individual book's node has to be expanded.

My question is: in this example, would it be possible to view all of the authors for all of the books in a single table view, e.g. a single table with each row containing <bookid, title, author>? (For a book with multiple authors, there would be repeated rows in the table with the same bookid & title.)

I'm guessing that the answer is no, because I'm asking for the XML hierarchical structure to be artificially flattened for display purposes.

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon,
what you ask is not easily doable in a generic way (as you state, you want to have a SQL-like report, where the columns from the master "table" are repeated for each entry in the secondary table).
Have you investigated writing a stylesheet that rearrange the XML in the format you want? Or do you want to also edit the original XML while viewing it in such a grid format?

Thanks,
Alberto
