Thanks for quick reply.
Now I see why it's not working, but I can't use variables in
template/@match, can I ?

Forgive me, you can in XSLT 2.0 and I failed to notice you were running XSLT 1.0 (which I *should* have since you were using exslt!).

So I can't figure out how to get original tree there, and it seems
that I have to use choose/when/otherwise.

Since you are in charge of the temporary tree, can you just throw that original tree attribute as an attribute of the top of your temporary tree so that you can look at it at any time using "/*/@condition" (which doesn't care about the name of the document element of the current tree)?
