On teh other hand it looks like you are parsing <markup> in which case (if it's xml) you ciuld use saxon:parse (or similar extensions) or you could use tagsoup as an extension or htmlparse.xsl as a native xslt2 arser for xml or html-ish markup. (The source for htmlparse.xsl has some similarly long regexp that are all concatenated.
