There seem to be an number of pipeline XML standards. Are you using any of them?
How could you integrate an alternative step into the pipeline. For example I have been working on the OASIS CAM specification for XML validation. I woudl like to integrate JCAM into the Pipeline?

The graphical interface Stylus Studio exposes is more abstract than any specific standard. W3C is working (http://2006.xmlconference.org/programme/presentations/154.html) on a new version of the XML Pipeline specs, and we will end up being very similar to those specs, and to even deploy according to those specs once they settle down.
About the validation step in pipeline, the pipelines\stocks example shipped as part of Stylus Studio shows that, and also the ability to choose pipeline paths depending on the result of an XPath expression. See also http://www.stylusstudio.com/xml/operations.html for a list of supported operations.
