If your XSLT processor supports EXPath Binary (Saxon-PE/EE does ), then you
can use the technique illustrated at
http://expath.org/spec/binary#example%E2%80%93JPEG.
Alternatively if you can execute Java functions as extension functions, then
are quite a few possibilities through that route.
