The pricing was a problem when the CELT project started: it was the same as an entire year's funding. Fortunately Brian Travis and others were instrumental in getting a copy donated to the project, which was in use until a few years ago.

mainframe era,

Around the same time they were also looking for editing software, and Betsy Dale from Arbortext showed me just what they needed b at $5,000 a seat and no academic discount. Hello, Emacs :-)
