replacing tabs and the like in a string
I tried the obvious replace("abc def", '\\t') (the space is a
tab) and variations thereof (declaring a variable for the tab) and I
get "The regular expression in replace() must not be one that matches
a zero-length string"

If you have a solution to hand I'd be grateful.
