I understood how the semantics of position() and last() affected @* before I posted. In programming languages we say x = x + 1 or claim that x++ adds 1 to x instead of 2. In each case they only make sense within the narrow confine of the semantics of their particular programming model otherwise they are incontrovertibly counterfactual and counterintuitive respectively in the same way that I say that applying an ordering semantic to something that is unordered is paradoxical.
