Tools that generate XSLT code often generate very poor code, in my experience. Your statement that the code is monolithic, preventing selective overriding, seems to confirm this. If you can't change the XSLT then it's not clear what you can do; your options seem to be limited, and you're unlikely to get much help here unless you give us a lot more information.
