Which should obviously work right ?

No that is a syntax error string() is a function that returns a string and can not be used in a pattern like that.

99.99 times out of a 100, if you are writing

<template match="NODE/text()" >

you should be using

<template match="NODE" >

why do you want the template to fire on the element content rather than the element?
