That may be true in some regular expression dialects, but it's not true in the dialect defined for XPath (which is based on the one defined for XSD).

and '-' isn't magic if it is first or last.
There's a long history of confusion in this area for the XSD regex dialect, so it's best to avoid making such assumptions. See for example
