Thanks a million again, Jack http://www.saxonica.com/documentation/javadoc/net/sf/saxon/StandardURIResolver.html implies the uri resolver gets used for document() however the tag soup doc http://home.ccil.org/~cowan/XML/tagsoup/ implies you could specify a local uri to the dtd directly rather than using the w3c one and then needing a catalog.
