One could use a qualified name for the variables:

<xsl:variable name="sub:test" ... />
<xsl:variable name="main:test" ...$sub:test... />

or use two different local names.  Note you would need to defined xmlns:sub on
the xsl:transform or xsl:stylesheet in sub.xsl and xmlns:main on the
xsl:transform or xsl;stylesheet in main.xsl.
