You refer to sets of nodes so I think you are using xpath1. nodeset is the only type available there which can't really model this (unless you copy all the nodes into an xml focument representing the product). Xpath2 has sequences of nodes, but again you can't really model the product of sequences as you can't have sequences of sequences. in xslt1 and 2 though you can of course effectively iterate over all the items in the product just by having nested for-each loops which iterates over each set, and for most purposes, this is enough...
