If you want to modify the contents of an element then you don't want to copy it (as copies have the same structure as the original) you need to apply templates. Start with the identity template which does a shallow copy of each node, then applies templates to child nodes, then add a template to modify whatever you need to modify. there are numerous examples of this in the faq and archives of this list.
