Nor is what I said meant in any way to disparage HTML Tidy, which generally does an ugly job very well. In this instance, it has to decide whether to emit incorrect output (in this case, the XHTML output is required to follow the Namespaces Rec), to change the data (munging that name or the PI itself in some way), or to refuse to process the file. None of those are good choices. But it's an ugly job. And for all I know, more recent versions of Tidy at least emit a warning of some kind. The point was simply that we are looking here at the corner of an edge, where it is likely there is some inconsistency among tools and technologies, even those that are ordinarily very reliably well-behaved.
