Is there a way to supress this behaviour in the stylesheet? I am using
Saxon 9b and XSLT 2.0.

According to http://www.saxonica.com/documentation/using-xsl/commandline.html there is a command line option
-expand:off
which disables expansion of default or fixed attribute values.
