I was using something similar but with different results. I had this template to exclude 'Evens' and this identity (copy) template :- > <xsl:template match="Evens"> > > <xsl:apply-templates/> > </xsl:template> > > > <xsl:template match="*|@*|text()"> > <xsl:copy-of select="."/> > </xsl:template> > > If Evens is not the top most element node, then the template matching Evens (and any other template) will have no effect, as the second template will match the document element and then copy-of the entire document, templates will not be applied at all to any nodes other than the document node / and the top level element.
