Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) the current application simply requires to conflate both to a HTML <p>, retaining only such subelement markup as the editors of the project have decided (bold, italics, and links). The objective was to allow authors to continue to write in Word, using only specific named styles to identify structure, and discard all decorative markup.
