HighWire Press (http://highwire.stanford.edu) at Stanford University has one or more openings for XSLT developers. This is a senior developer position for someone very familiar with XSLT. HighWire Press assists in the publication of scientific and scholarly journals, working with some of the most prestigious publications in the areas of biomedical, physical and social sciences. We are seeking individuals to assist in the development and extension of our XML/XSLT-based publishing system.

This position is located in Palo Alto, California and is open to US citizens or those holding current work visas. We are not able to assist or sponsor individuals applying for a work visa.

HighWire Press is a program for Internet-Based Scholarly Publishing that has been launched by Stanford University Libraries/Academic Information Resources (SUL/AIR). A new Senior Systems Software Developer position is available to work with the Systems team to develop and manage the WWW software and services which implement the Program. The goals of the Program are to: Foster research and instruction by providing a more direct linkage between the writers and readers of scholarly materials. Use innovative network tools for capture, publishing, retrieval, reading and presentation. Affect the economics of provision of scholarly information to researchers, especially science and technology materials.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Detailed design, development and support of large components of all of the HighWire Press's publications; responsibilities range from earliest conception of user requirements through to final implementation and user support.
* Day to day work includes architecture, user interface design, developing specific programs, publishing, conversion, database and display systems, tools, and services; and for system integration that utilize the WWW, Fast, Java, Apache clients and servers and other information applications and services.
* Contribute to developing strategies for, & planning & managing process of architecting, acquiring, deploying & supporting technical design & operation of internet publishing.
* Make use of XHTML, XSLT, Sybase SQL, FAST Search Engine, CGI, C, Java, Perl, and other technologies to create on-line publishing systems (including information pages, viewers, retrieval tools, helper apps, etc.). Implement significant functionality for information delivery and interactivity.
* Understand trends & assess new technologies, especially those relating to WWW, authentication, databases, etc.
* Incorporate new technologies into existing & emerging systems.
* Keep abreast of standardization efforts in Web community
* Communicate orally and in writing analysis of design issues, etc.
* Work as senior member of a team to deliver prototypes on time.
* Communicate frequently with team members about progress, schedules, and availability of test versions; incorporate team feedback into next steps.
* Deliver frequent mockups and/or working models that successively demonstrate and implement functionality.
* Conduct usability tests, report results, and determine design changes to address usability issues.
* Perform special projects on assignment.


QUALIFICATIONS:
* Must have broad technical computing background in computer systems, workstation/server systems (Unix/Linux), networking systems and databases.
* Experience in a multi-language environment (C, C++, Java, Perl, XSLT) and ability to use "best of breed" language for the project assignment.
* Must have ability to develop a vision for future computing needs & be able to develop appropriate plans to meet those needs.
* Experience with multi-vendor, multi-user, inter-networked computing environments.
* Experience should include success with both technical implementations and design for usability by end-users.
* Position requires knowledge & experience derived from extensive background in information systems &
attainment of skills required at senior technical level.
* Experience working in an academic environment and knowledge about the computing needs of the various computer users in an academic institution is desirable.


The following specific experience is required:
* Unusually thorough knowledge & understanding of information technology area on complex systems environments.
* Experience working with relational and/or hierarchical database systems.
* Ability to build rapid prototypes.
* Unusually strong conceptual, logical, and problem-solving abilities.
* Ability to deal with a largely non-technical clientele and to communicate effectively with people of computer knowledge levels from novice users to professionals.
* Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
* Sensitivity to and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
* Demonstrated experience at setting priorities; flexibility and ability to handle multiple assignments and work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines and in pressure situations.
* Experience with usability testing and analysis of results
* Experience with hardware diagnostics, etc.
* Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field OR at least 5 yrs of applicable experience and/or equivalent combination of education & experience.
* Consideration at 4P4 level will be given to candidates who have more experience.
