The XSLT serializer is outputting i in UTF-8 encoding, and you are looking at the resulting file using some piece of software that either can't display UTF-8, or doesn't know that's what it's been asked to do. Either display the result using something that can display UTF-8, or change the output encoding to something you can display, for example <xsl:output encoding="iso-8859-1"/>.
