I'm not sure it works for the OP. But it works for me. I actually use "my" GUID code quite often for tasks like this: it is quite likely globally unique and definitely unique within one run. (see also my previous post).

Understood: my remark wasn't meant as a criticism of the technique, which as such is just fine. I was just trying to keep the discussion on topic for the thread -- and guessing that sequentially created GUIDs might also be sequential (or have some other non-random relation, such as never being the same :-), without breaking any rules.


But while the philosophy of what is "random", either theoretically or for local practical purposes, is fascinating, it's not really in scope for XSLT. So keeping the discussion on topic for the thread was an attempt to keep it on topic for the list.
