And again, there's a fancy workaround in XSLT 1.0:


<xsl:for-each select="$nodes">
  <xsl:sort select="sort"/>
  <xsl:if test="position()=1">...</xsl:if>
</xsl:for-each>

... which is squirrely, but then that comes with the territory of 1.0.

This trick is written up in several places. Someone thought of it in the old days of XSLT 1.0, as an alternative to a recursive template call (whew).
