If your emphasis node is treated differently based upon it's parent,
simply create a match for each type:

<xsl:template match="emphasis[parent::a]">
  Perform a/emphasis formatting...
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="emphasis[parent::b]">
  Perform b/emphasis formatting...
</xsl:template>

I did it this way because emphasis nodes as well as para nodes show up
as children to many different parents and need to be handled in
different ways.
