<xsl:template match="//Group don't start a match with // (it doesn't do anything) at all in this case. <xsl:copy select="."> that's a syntax error xsl:copy doesn't take an attribute key('attribute-format-by-key',@Key) that returns a Attribute-Format element so key('attribute-format-by-key',@Key)[@ColIndex] returns that element if it has a ColIndex attribute and nothing otherwise. I didn't follow all your description but I think you want <xsl:template match="Grouping[not(key('attribute-format-by-key',@Key)]"/> and <xsl:template match="Grouping"> <xsl:copy> <xsl:attribute name="ColIndex"> <xsl:value-of select="count(key('attribute-format-by-key',@Key)/preceding-sibling::*)"/> </xsl:attribute> </xsl:copy> </xsl:template> David ________________________________________________________________________ The Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales with company number 1249803.
