No, xsl:strip-space only removes text nodes that consist entirely of
whitespace.

There is no way in XSLT of treating

<a>   <![CDATA[banana]]>   </a>

differently from

<a><![CDATA[   banana   ]]></a>

Since in both cases the <a> element has a single text node as its child.
