But sad that in 2004 Microsoft are still getting things wrong: "(The term

originally based on an ANSI draft, which became ISO Standard 8859-1...)"

That's nonsense, of course. ISO 8859-1 originated in ECMA (Recommendation
ECMA-94), not in ANSI. Microsoft referred to it as ANSI because ISO
standards in the US were republished by ANSI under their own label. I don't
know if that's still the case. There was some explanation for it such as
national standards being recognized in US law in a way that international
standards were not.
