Re: XSLT 2.0 has arrived
Yeah,

The argument here should be more about the potential of XSLT 2 rather than how to use it.

(I think if ERH went to court with his claims he would receive a dollar :) (you would have to read his blog to get it...))

I have not moved up to v2 mainly because most of my work in XSL, lately, has been in the browser. When I work on something that I do for myself (which, the end result is usualy for a client) I use a combination of multiple transforms and/or some other technology that supplies what I need. It works for me as I can see the point of failure and adjust 'just a little bit.'

I also fear that Saxon has a monopoly. Not because of strong arm tactics, but because of the excellence of its implementation. Who wants to compete with Dr. Kay? Of course languages other than java are open. M.D. Peterson has done an excellent implementation of Saxon for Windows (but, what is the adoption??? ).

I basically have 2 reasons for not moving up:
- I haven't needed it
- I worry that there is no competion in the java space (where I spend my time)

Oh (sorry Tommy), and the folk that have bemoaned SUN's implementation of java (yeah, I wish there was a utopia) -- do you think, just maybe.., it might take a little more effort to have a project that is cross platform than relying on an OS's implementation? You are talking apples and oranges. Oooohh, I can do this on the command line (but I will probably have to pay Apple to get the next - bug fix - version). Oh and if you try to install, you will first need this - and if you install this, you will OF COURSE need this (you fool), and so on...

best,
-Rob

Friends --

This thread has degenerated and drifted far off topic. Please restrict discussion on XSL-List to topics that are directly related to XSL.

Discussions of the design of Java, Saxon, or Windows is simply off topic here.

Thank you for taking that discussion elsewhere.

Further discussion of XSLT 2.0, the impact and implications of it are, of course, welcome on XSL-List.
