If you allow yourself extension functions you could use saxon:parse() (or similar) which would work for the example you gave, but in general if you want to parse (non well formed) html you'd need to use an extension function to tagsoup or some other html parser. If d-o-e works in the context that you are in. it's no doubt going to be the easiest and quickest...
