weird character

I just got an error while trying a transformation in PHP. When I looked at
the source XML, I saw a weird character after Real:

<Field Name="Comment">Madeby Harpaul A Kohli W Real
</Field>

PHP throws this error:

The source XML is UTF-8 as is my stylesheet. Any ideas how to get around
this?
