blank line after div
  You gave me an idea: I want the text node immediately following a div with an
  index class. Then I could use substring-after(., $LF)?
  Regards, Manfred

If I understand you correctly you mean something like

<xsl:template match="text()[contains(.,'
')]
                            [preceding-sibling::node()[1]/self::div/@class='index']"
>
<xsl:value-of select="substring-after(.,'
')"/>
</xsl:template>
