$aVal[for $a in . return normalize-space(

so that sequence is going to be a sequence of strings, and if it has
length greater than 1 you will get an error.


perhaps you want

$aVal[not(empty(for $a in . return normalize-space(

which would test if the sequence is non empty, but thene there is no
point in doing normalize-space as that doesn't affect whether the
sequence is empty or not
