Inside a xsl:for-each group, just as in an xsl:for-each the current node is one of teh nodes selected by the select expression. so after <xsl:for-each-group select="par ... it's a par node. Then you do <xsl:for-each-group select="*" g so that is selecting children of the par node but you have group-ending-with="par... and as far as I can see non of the children selected by * will be par nodes so everything will be in the same group.
