It does, but unless you apply templates to a node then it doesn't matter
which templates match that node, nnoe of them will be run.

You don't have a template matching tree, so the default template is used
that applies templates to its children. The child tree_node is then
matched to your template, but that doesn't use apply-templates so the
matching process is terminated at that point. As the if test is true you
get the value of the attribute then the processing stops.
