Its great to hear that it is possible in xsl at all.
I do not understand how to do that. What does using this generate id do?
Could you extend you example that it just works for the example I have
given in my email?

This is a standard grouping problem, see
www.jenitennison.com/xslt/grouping
(It's also much easier in xslt2 draft (eg saxon8) which has specific
grouping constructs for this case.)

Basically you want to group all elements by the value of

generate-id((.|preceding-sibling::p)[@class='foo][last()])
